Since it is the strain that is predominantly responsible for the hardening of the material, any unnecessary or redundant strain in the attempted deformation will inevitably increase the degree of strain-hardening.

Physically, the hydrostatic stress component is responsible for the dilation, or the change in the volume of the material element, but since all the 'hydrostatic' stresses are principal stresses and shearing effects are therefore automatically absent, no change in the shape of the element will be produced. The deviatoric component a', however, by virtue of producing shearing stresses on other planes within the element , is responsible for dimensional changes and , eventually, for the plastic flow.

With the clear distinction between what constitutes reality and what is only a mathematical concept in mind, we can make full use of the idea of stress in purely practical terms by employing the concept to describe changes that take place in a material body subjected to an external system of forces, to compare the effects of different types of loading systems on the same element, or to discuss the response of dissimilar elements to the same loading system. The definition of stress is unaffected by the regime in which the force system operates and remains therefore the same in both the elastic and plastic situations.
