Design theory – discredited While there are national differences between emphasis on the teaching of theory in design education, few practising designers now see the relevance of what they know of design theory to what they practise. In Britain, at least, it is ‘hip’ to regard attempts to forge links between theory and practice as outdated and proved by history to be flawed. 47 The tacit nature of designers’ knowledge, the indefinable nature of most design problems and the empirical problem-solving techniques employed by many designers do suggest that design practice is largely based on experience and experimentation rather than the application of a conscious theory.

Rather than inviting in more non-design disciplines, why not first engage with actual designers and the problems they encounter. From this point of departure a coherent framework of knowledge could be developed that makes the insightful connections between design and other disciplines. An admirable goal for design historians would be to study designers’ tacit knowledge, make it explicit and then suggest how that knowledge may be improved through exposure to knowledge from other disciplines.
