1860–1910: Henequen Boom The Yucatán’s economy is transformed as global demand soars for sisal rope, made from the henequen cactus. This “green gold” is the best rope in the world until the arrival of synthetics in the 1950s. Vast new wealth is reflected in Mérida’s extravagant mansions, theaters, and other attractions for henequen magnates and hacienda-owners. The boom even partly survives the Mexican Revolution, which begins in 1910. 1971: Tourism Arrives Another economic transformation begins as the first hotel opens in Cancún, the dawn of the tourism era.

Its displays provide an overview of the Mayan world that illuminates visits to the ruins themselves. The arcaded square of Santa Lucía (above), dating in part from 1575, is the most romantic of all Mérida’s old squares. Free concerts of traditional music take place every Thursday (see p63). The Trios Walk around the Plaza Mayor on most evenings and you’ll see groups of men in threes, dressed in white shirts and black trousers, and carrying guitars. These are the Yucatán trios, traditional troubadours available for hire to play romantic serenades.
