The second or ‘dynamic view’, already discussed above, focuses on the influence of repressed material on consciousness. Freud now distinguished between ‘primal repression’, which happened when instinctual material was so threatening that it never passed the threshold of consciousness at all, and ‘repression proper’ (Freud 1915a: 148, original italics), which referred to the exclusion of material that had been in full awareness. Repression was now understood to be the main mechanism of defence. According to the third, ‘topographical’ (Freud 1915b: 172), view, there are three interacting systems, a conscious ‘system Cs’, a descriptively unconscious ‘system Pcs’ (‘preconscious’) and a repressed unconscious ‘system Ucs’.

Mesmer introduced to a wide public the concept of psychological healing through means that were Conscious and unconscious in historical perspective 23 neither directly medical (such as the use of medicine or surgery) nor theological (such as the use of exorcism to cast out evil spirits). His methods had much in common with faith healing, but he believed that his cures were mediated by an invisible fluid whose flow he was able to manipulate, and which he described in terms of metaphors rooted in the science of magnetic forces and electrical currents.

The fourth ‘economic’ view conceptualized the way in which ‘excitation’ was activated, transformed and transmitted within and between these systems. The ‘cathexis’ (excitation) of repressed ‘libido’ or sexual excitation could be converted into somatic symptoms, but it could also be discharged as anxiety ‘without the subject knowing what he is afraid of’, or displaced to other ‘psychical activity’, such as phobias and obsessional ruminations (1915b: 181, 182). He distinguished between the orderly and rational ‘secondary process’ thinking of the system Pcs/Cs, and the chaotic and irrational ‘primary process’ of the system Ucs.
