We eliminated cases in which both partners had the same OC score or when both partners wrote part of the answer. Consistent with our analysis, as shown in Table 3-3, we found the partner with the higher OC score wrote the answer to the problem more than twice as often as the partner with the lower score. Taken together, the research reviewed thus far supports the view that people with a high desire for control will actively work to control sodal interactions, using a variety of methods and strategies.

The use of this control-enhancing speech style is particularly interesting in that the interview situation implicitly identifies the interviewer as the one who is in control of much of the interaction. The interviewer is supposed to be the one who asks the questions, probes, and changes topics, while the interviewee's job is to follow the interviewer's lead and provide the information he or she seeks. Yet it may have been the lack of control inherent in this role that led the high desire for control subjects to these control-enhancing behaviors.

However, the image of high desire for control people actively manipulating the behavior of the people they talk with may be only part of the picture. Social interactions necessarily involve the exchange of information, and at times controlling that information may be important. Would it be better to express how you feel about a controversial issue in a group discussion or wait until you find out how the other people feel first? Should you reveal personal information about yourself or wait until you are sure that your partner can be trusted with this information?
